Why do I have to wear retainers?
Wearing a retainer after braces is crucial to maintaining the straightened position of your teeth. During the treatment period, your braces shift your teeth into a new position, but your teeth and surrounding tissues need time to adapt to this new position. Without a retainer, your teeth may gradually shift back towards their original position and undo all the hard work done during the braces treatment. The retainer holds a new position, but the bone and tissues supporting your teeth need time to adjust to these new positions. If you don't use a retainer after the braces are removed, the teeth can gradually shift back into their original positions.  The retainer holds your teeth steady and helps your jaw and surrounding tissues settle into the new alignment, keeping your teeth in the correct position. It is recommended to wear your retainer as instructed by your orthodontist to ensure the best results and prevent any further movement.
